#TBT - Engle's Corner
Engle’s Corner, located at the intersection of present day Oxford State Road and South Main Street, takes its name from the prominent Engle’s Family. Headed by Harry E. Engle (1834-1909) and Ida Ryerson Engle (1840-1906), the Engle Family once lived in a large house on the northeast corner of the intersection - now home to the McDonalds.
Henry, Butler County Treasurer, and Ida had five children: Mary “Mame” Erwin Engle (1860 - 1908); Eleanor “Nellie” Boylen Engle (1862 - 1924); Henry Ryerson Engle (1864 - 1939); Louise “Lou” Noble Engle (1867 - 1892); and Frederick William Engle (1869 - 1938).
Mary “Mame” Erwin Engle graduated from the Female College in Glendale, Ohio and then studied art in Boston and Chicago. Afterwards, she returned to the area and became the Director of Arts for the Middletown Schools. Henry Ryerson Engle would go on to marry Minnie Schiffer Harding, daughter of Abraham Ebenezer Harding - founder of the Harding-Jones Paper Company.
